Beginners – Exploring Wheel Throwing

Saturday 18th October | 11:00 AM – 5:30 PM
(6-hour session incl. lunch break + 30 min clean-up)

Join ceramicist Naemi Miyazu for a days wheel throwing in her Leyton studio. Enjoy breakfast and lunch provided by Pophams Bakery

This class is ideal for those completely new to pottery, or with some experience looking to start fresh and strengthen their core skills. We’ll start by going over the fundamentals — including essential theory, clay preparation, and the step-by-step process of creating a cylinder on the wheel. A key focus will be on centering the clay and wall pulling, the foundational techniques that give you the control and confidence to throw successfully.

We’ll practice classic shapes such as cylinders and bowls, which are key building blocks for developing your pottery skills. Once we’ve covered the basics, we’ll gradually level up to next-level forms like flared, rounded, and tapered shapes, small vases, and other fun pieces to further develop your technique. I’ll demonstrate each step and form, and you’ll have plenty of time to try them out and fine-tune your skills.

By the end of the session, you’ll have gained confidence in centering and pulling walls, along with a strong understanding of the techniques needed to begin making more refined and intentional work.

With only 4–5 participants, you’ll receive focused, personalised attention throughout the day. All materials are included. Fired pots are charged at £5 per kilo to cover glaze and firing costs.

Please note this is a throwing-only class. At the end of the session, you’ll choose your favourite pots for me to glaze and fire. I’ll give all pieces a light trim before firing. If you’re interested in trimming your pots yourself, we can arrange a group session if there’s enough interest.

The workshop will be held at Naemi's studio: Unit 44H, Leyton Industrial Village, E10 7QP

Please bring your own apron and ensure your nails are trimmed short for the class.
