Meet Kimberley Chan of San San Ceramics and creator of our newest collaboration...
Tell us a little bit about your journey and what it took to become a professional ceramicist?
I was searching for a hobby that would balance out working on a computer all day and tried a taster class at The Kiln Rooms in 2016. I was immediately hooked and became a member of Turning Earth for a few years which gave me time and space to develop. Towards the end of 2020, the pandemic pushed me to find a studio share of my own that would give me more freedom and opportunities to experiment with materials.
What’s a typical day in the life of San San Ceramics?
If I'm working on a big ceramics project I try to keep to a 9-6 day. I plan my day the evening before and group similar admin/prep tasks together so I get more focused time on the fun parts like throwing. When it's a bit quieter and I'm working on a design project during the day, I would be at the pottery studio perhaps 2-3 evenings a week and one day over the weekend.
You also work in Graphic Design. How do you feel your background influences your ceramics?
I work predominantly in branding which involves distilling ideas into their simplest forms to create memorable and elevated experiences. I like to apply the same principles to the pots I make – simple, functional pieces that people will naturally reach for and make something ordinary, just that little bit more special.
What or who inspires you?
I'm inspired by a lot of interior and exterior environments because of the different ways raw materials, colour, texture and patterns can be used throughout. I love that these projects involve multiple creative disciplines, and seeing how they can all compliment each other to create something beautiful. I'm a strong believer in collaboration and that the best creation is never made in isolation.
What advice would you have for makers at the start of their journey?
Don't be too precious at the beginning and don't overlook the small things you've achieved. Maybe you centered a little quicker, or threw a cylinder half a cm taller this time. It's all a sign of improvement.
Is there a favourite piece you like to make or are really proud of?
My favourite pieces to make will always be things that I'm looking to improve at the time. I enjoy making mugs at the moment as I'm trying to nail the perfect pulled handle.

Favourite spot to get a coffee?
On a sunny day it's always nice to sit on a bench outside HUCKS, one of my local cafés in Walthamstow.
What book, podcast, or tv show are you currently enjoying?
I love so many podcasts but my main two at the moment are Even the Rich and British Scandal. I enjoy a good bit of storytelling.
Which artist or maker are you loving at the moment?
Lora Huws Ceramics is my talented studio mate and I feel lucky to work alongside her.
And lastly your favourite Pophams pastry?
I am a fan of the rhubarb and custard when it’s in season!
